The 301st Infanterie Division was formed around the middle of 1917 and was located in the Vosges area, in the vicinity of Ban de Sapt. “The Division remained in its sector in Armee-Abtlg. A without event throughout 1918. It’s losses were negligible. The companies had an average ration strength of 170 men; an average trench strength of 105. The Division was rated as fourth class. It was one of the lowest of that class in value. The morale was low and desertions frequent”.

On Vashon Island, Washington there is a bike that has grown into a tree. As the story goes, a boy left his bike chained there when he went off to war in 1914. He never returned. The bike remained where he had left it, either forgotten by time or as a tribute to his memory.
